Triumph offers Employability Skills, Workplace Readiness and Disability Management Workshops.


Employability Skills Workshops


Through Employability Skills Workshops, clients identify their interests and skills and learn how these can be transfered to the workplace. Outcomes include: healthier attitudes about work, increased employability and an enhanced capacity to participate in work.

Career Exploration
Through informal assessment tools, clients determine their values, strengths, transferable skills and interests in order to make informed career choices. Outcomes of this workshop include identifying possible vocational options such as volunteering, work experience, informational interviews and further vocational research.
 
Problem Solving Skills
Experiential learning opportunities allow clients to develop skills and strategies to effectively solve everyday problems and overcome barriers to success. Outcomes include an increased ability to identify problems, brainstorm solutions and seek resolution to challenges.

Assertiveness Training
Clients gain a better awareness of assertive behaviour and learn about appropriate responses to different communication styles through experiential practice and brainstorming. Outcomes include an enhanced ability to respond to situations in an assertive manner.

Goal Setting Skills
This workshop provides clients with a formula for setting and reaching realistic, attainable goals. Using the SMART method, different types of goals (e.g. short-term, long-term, personal and vocational) are reviewed. Outcomes include identifying goals, increasing understanding of the goal-setting process and learning motivational techniques to ensure success.

Memory and Attention Skills
Clients learn techniques that enhance their ability to retain information and pay attention in different settings. These techniques help clients organize new information; study effectively; stay positive in new learning situations and avoid distraction. Outcomes include the acquirement of techniques and skills to support clients in their success with personal and vocational goals.

Learning Styles
Using the Personal Learning Styles Inventory assessment tool, clients explore whether they are a visual, auditory, or kinaesthetic learners and how this affects their ability to master new tasks. Outcomes include the identification of a dominant learning style and practical tools that support each client’s learning style in a vocational setting.

Personal Presentation
Clients become acquainted with the expectations for personal presentation in a variety of environments. The importance of first impressions, verbal/non-verbal body language and personal grooming are explored to assist clients in putting their best foot forward. Outcomes include increased awareness of personal presentation and how this relates to securing employment.

Time Management
This workshop gives clients guidelines on how to prioritize their time and formulate a plan for managing their daily tasks, including training or work. Clients identify both their strengths and challenges with time management, and how to best utilize their time to meet deadlines and goals. Outcomes inlcude the ability to prioritize effectively, deal with procrastination and enhance time management in relation to vocational or personal goals. 

Job Retention
This workshop reviews employers' expectations and the structure of the workplace. Clients will review strategies for getting along with coworkers and interacting with supervisors. Content will include employment issues such as workplace behaviours, job retention, how to recognize and solve problems and create positive change. Outcomes include an understanding of today’s work environment, the employer’s view of business, how employees fit into organizations and a winning set of job retention skills.

Money Management
This workshop explores current financial management practices and assists clients to develop a plan for managing personal resources effectively, such as how to deal with debt, make a budget, plan spending, manage a chequing account and understand credit. Outcomes include learning tools to assess personal budget needs, build awareness of financial concepts and make a financial plan for the future.

Building Self-Esteem
This interactive workshop focuses on how self-esteem relates to employment as well as quality of life. Self-talk, affirmations, self-care, social influences and various personal appreciation and enhancement exercises are reviewed to develop self-esteem. Outcomes include the identification of concrete ways to improve self-esteem.

Conflict Resolution
The goal of this workshop is to give clients the tools to resolve conflicts on the job or in their personal lives. Practical strategies for acquiring active listening, restating and negotiation skills are examined. Outcomes include the identification of different types of conflict, appropriate strategies to resolve a conflict, and the importance of debriefing/closing a conflict.

Basic Computers
Through hands-on participation and discussion, clients will learn how to use computers more safely and effectively. Clients will learn about parts of the computer, Windows and Office programs, how to use the start menu, shutting down the computer, creating, saving and deleting files, email, the internet and other valuable computer skills. Outcomes include acquiring basic computer skills to reduce fear about technology, learning the basics of a computer and how to navigate the internet.

Advanced Computers
During this interactive workshop, clients will learn how to perform some of the more complex Word and Excel applications. Email, browser tips, windows shortcuts and creating a budget using Excel will be explored in more detail. Outcomes include a more in-depth knowledge of computer use.

Community Resources for Aboriginals
(Faciitated by the British Columbia Aboriginal Network on Disability Society.)
The workshop explores various community resources for Aboriginal clients (First Nations, Inuit and Metis) who have disability-related employment barriers. Resources will include housing on and off reserve, health, community networking, alternative funding, Friendship Centre services and First Nations-focused counselling services. Outcomes include increased awareness about community-based resources.

Workplace Readiness Workshops  

The objective of these workshops is to help clients develop the skills needed to secure employment or other employment-related positions. Outcomes range from developing a new resume and cover letter to finding a volunteer position, work experience, job shadow opportunity, or paid job.

The Labour Market
Clients will learn about hiring trends, the hidden job market and vocational options such as job carving. Techniques for acquiring labour market information and making use of local resources are reviewed. Outcomes include familiarity with how to use labour market information and how to conduct informational interviews and identify next steps for career plans.

Workplace Expectations
Employer expectations in relation to workplace communication and performance are explored through practical examples and role-plays. Workplace rights and responsibilities are reviewed with participants. The expected outcome is that clients will have an increased awareness of employer expectations and their responsibilities as an employee.

Employment Standards and Human Rights

In this workshop, clients will learn about employment standards and human rights as they relate to workers in general and workers with disabilities. Outcomes include learning about: how to work collaboratively with employers to ensure that everyone's rights and responsibilities are respected; the requirement to provide disability accommodations in the workplace; how to seek outside assistance if needed.

Community Resources

Clients will learn about various community resources and will also be encouraged to share their knowledge of resources that can support their fellow clients. Resources can include food, shelter, clothing, health care, child care, mental health and disability-specific resources. Outcomes include developing a plan to reduce personal obstacles using various local community resources.

Disclosure and Self-Advocacy at Work
Clients will learn about the benefits of disability disclosure, the varying degrees of disclosure, when not to disclose, as well as scripting techniques. Outcomes include learning about self-advocacy, creating a personalized script and practising disclosure.

Workplace Communication Skills
One of the key skills for finding and keeping employment is being able to communicate effectively. By reviewing effective communication methods, clients learn how to develop effective workplace relationships and build supportive working environments. Increased awareness about employer expectations regarding workplace communication, problem solving and maintaining positive working relationships are the key learning outcomes in this interactive workshop.

Selling the Benefits to Employers
This workshop focuses on examining clients' strengths and gives them the tools to effectively share these strengths during interviews and on the job. Outcomes include: the acquisition of tools for enhancing motivation and managing disabilities, increased employment readiness and an enhanced capacity to participate in employment or employment-related activities.

Change Management
This workshop assists clients to learn effective skills for dealing with workplace change in a healthy and solution-focused way. Outcomes of this workshop include an enhanced ability to handle the conflict and stress that arise during the process of change.

How to Work in a Team
A solid understanding of teamwork can make clients more effective employees and increase job retention. This workshop will focus on practical skills for team building such as clarifying goals, trusting others, how to reach consensus, decision making and communication strategies. Outcomes include being able to work more effectively as a team member.

Disability Management Workshops

The objective of these workshops is to assist clients to better manage their disabilities and help them focus on their strengths and abilities. A greater sense of control, optimism, function and ability to cope are the expected outcomes.

Stress Management
(Under the supervision of a Registered Psychologist.)
The use of the Stress Response Index assessment tool helps clients explore various forms of “stress”and individual stress responses. Outcomes of this workshop include learning about stressors and how to cope with them effectively using stress management and relaxation techniques.

Activity and Recreational Planning
(Conducted by an Occupational Therapist.)
The goal of this workshop is to review different approaches to activity and explore the definition of “pacing.” Learning outcomes include setting up an activity plan (e.g. determining base level of activity and how to increase to achieve goal) as well as the practical application of pacing to functional activities, work simulation and work.

Communication Skills
(Under the supervision of a Registered Psychologist.)
This interactive workshop includes the use of role-playing and assessment tools such as the Assertiveness Self-Report Inventory, Aggression Questionnaire and Communication Styles. Outcomes include enhanced communication skills and conflict resolution tehcniques.

Sleep Management
(Conducted by an Occupational Therapist.)
Positive sleep habits, sleep cycles, sleep disorders and sleep medications are reviewed in this interactive workshop. Effective relaxation techniques are explored and practised. The learning outcomes of this workshop include increased sleep management as well as the development of relaxation techniques that participants can apply in their day-to-day activities.

Pain Management
(Conducted by an Occupational Therapist.)
Techniques for improved body positioning, effective activity pacing and basic body mechanics are explored. The workshop includes work simplification and self-help modalities such as stretching, heat/ice, relaxation, medication and effective strategies for handling “flare-ups”.  Outcomes include an increased ability to manage pain, plan activities and minimize the re-occurrence of injuries related to body mechanics.

Positive Self-Talk
(Under the supervision of a Registered Psychologist.)
The Dysfunctional Attitude Scale helps participants explore the cognitive-behavioural model and effective strategies for dealing with day-to-day activities. Concepts such as thinking traps and strategies to dispute negative self-talk are explored with practical examples. The learning outcomes of this workshop include: increased positive self-talk; increased ability to identify and correct negative thinking patterns; daily strategies to increase overall disability management.

Creating a Personalized Wellness Plan
This workshop will provide clients with the opportunity to explore and develop a holistic and personalized wellness plan. We will consider environmental, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical health and seek to identify wellness goals that bring more balance into clients' lives. Outcomes include identifying potential barriers related to vocational goals and brainstorming supports and solutions that will assist clients to be prepared for the transition to employment.

Healthy Eating on a Limited Budget 
This three-hour Disability Management Workshop will explore the components of nutrition (e.g., Protein, Fat, Fibre, and Carbohydrate) and the recommended daily intake based on the Canadian Food Guide. The concept of budgeting will be introduced with a discussion related to money-saving ideas. Outcomes include how to incorporate healthy eating on a limited budget (with an emphasis on accessing community-based resources), food preparation and storage.

Accommodations and Technology Solutions
(Facilitated by Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing or Canadian Institute for the Blind.)
This workshop will provide clients with adaptive technology that can be used at home, work, school and for personal use. Various funding sources and adaptive technologies not provided through Assistive Technology BC will be explored. Outcomes include increased awareness about available disability supports.

Wellness and Recovery

This workshop centres around the concept of recovery in relation to mental illness. It examines the stress cycle and its impact on mental health and provides an overview of stress management techniques. Participants will explore the concept of recovery and the role of personal responsibility in maintaining wellness. Outcomes include learning to live with the illness, achieving a high quality of life satisfaction and minimizing relapses and hospital admissions.
