A Triumph Vocational Services™ Success Story • October 2004

Most of Donna’s experiences with disability services were not good. She remembered them well and expected to encounter a similar negative experience at Triumph. But that’s not what happened. To her surprise, Donna’s Triumph experience was very positive. “The difference was in the respect Triumph extended to me as a person,” said Donna.

People with disabilities are often disrespected.Too often, people can’t see beyond the disability. But that doesn’t happen at Triumph. Staff at Triumph respect individuals and their vision of success—success on their own terms. “For me,” said Donna, “one of my terms of success was being treated as a normal person, not as a disability. And that’s exactly what I found in my Triumph experience.”

Because of the way Triumph treated her, Donna was able to relax and enjoy her job search. She tackled every task Triumph gave her to do. In the process, she learned about her personal interests and employment options, and she made some very important discoveries. For one, she discovered her need to help others and her desire to work with a humanitarian organization. “Through my Triumph experience, I discovered I didn’t want to work in an organization focused on the bottom line,“ said Donna. This important discovery helped to refine Donna’s job search to a specific type of organization. With that focus, Donna found her options were endless.

All Donna’s efforts at Triumph reflected her positive outlook, an outlook her team shared with her. “Finding volunteer work with a humanitarian organization gave me an even more positive outlook. It also gave me more confidence and a sense of purpose,” said Donna. The job made Donna feel she was helpful to the community—another one of her terms of success.

Donna advises newcomers to Triumph to go in with a positive attitude. “My counsellors at Triumph wanted me to succeed,” said Donna. ”They put all their efforts into helping me to succeed on my own terms.” With this positive and focused approach, they were all successful, and Donna is still reaping the rewards.
