Triumph Vocational Services Kai finds gold in a pet shop A Triumph Vocational Services™ Success Story • October 2004 “Keep striving,” Kai says to people with disabilities who want to find work. Kai “thought one way and found something new” through his experience with Triumph. When Kai started the Triumph program, he had ideas for work. Like most people, he thought of typical jobs, but hadn’t considered what he really wanted to do. Then his Triumph team got him thinking about various possibilities, and they explored options together. Kai really enjoyed the career exploration. He was excited to find different types of work that he could do despite his disability. He also learned more about his disability through the options they considered. Then he learned more about how his body works when he attended the Back in Motion Program, a rehabilitation service that helps Persons with Disabilities return to work. Kai’s next step was a job experience placement, and his team found one in the pet department at Wal-Mart. Kai said he would never have considered working in a pet shop before, but he was excited.Talking to gold fish every day sounded like fun. Doing it turned out to be even better. Throughout the job search process, Kai also learned communication skills. He really liked that, too, because he found himself communicating better at home and work and feeling more confident in general. Kai was excited that his life was changing all around. Kai says his Triumph experience was terrific. “I needed to do something useful.” But he had no idea he would enjoy himself as well. Now, he feels “incredible, positive, useful, and a part of society.” Success! Kai really enjoyed the career exploration through Triumph. He was excited to find different types of work he could do despite his disability. Success on your own terms |
