Triumph Vocational Services

Success means saying Goodbye

A Triumph Vocational Services™ Success Story • October 2004

When Triumph says they’ll help you they mean it, according to Darren Jones. He believes Triumph helped him far beyond what he expected. Now, he’s happy, more confident, and financially independent.

Before Darren worked with a Triumph team, he worked at various jobs off and on. But he wanted more.

He wanted to be financially independent and able to support his wife and home on his own. That meant a regular job with a decent salary.

He knew what he wanted to do, but he wasn’t sure if he could do the job despite his disability. He needed help figuring that out.

The first thing Darren’s Triumph counsellor did was talk to Darren about his previous line of work in relation to his disability. They figured out what Darren needed to avoid and what he could still do.

He had learned a lot of valuable skills, so he was shown how these skills could be transferred into his desired job. Darren was happy about that because he didn’t want to take on a major retraining program.

All he needed to learn was how to operate a forklift.Triumph got him the training and he got his Forklift Operator Certificate. Then Birgit, his placement counsellor, helped him look for work.

Birgit found a one-month paid work-experience placement for Darren. Darren didn’t expect to be paid, but he was elated to find this work-experience was a paying position.

But there was more for Darren. He was hired on full-time, and that meant regular good pay. He could say goodbye to his disability benefits and move on. He was free at last after only a couple of months of working with his Triumph team.

Darren said Triumph is “a great program,” and “a great experience.” He’s grateful for all the support he got from his Triumph team, and he’s also grateful for his wife’s support. Without all that help, he said, “this wouldn’t have happened.”

Darren wanted to be financially independent.

He knew what he wanted to do, but wasn’t sure if he could do the job despite his disability.

Triumph helped him figure it out and say goodbye to his disability benefits.
