MYTH: Employers don't really want to hire persons with disabilities.

FACT:
In a recent survey conducted by the British Columbia Chamber of Commerce, 69% of employers polled in BC said that they would hire persons with disabilities and 79% agreed with the statement: "Persons with a disability represent a qualified, but largely untapped pool of potential job applicants."


MYTH: Triumph will force me into employment.

FACT:
Triumph's services are completely voluntary and self-paced. Whether you want support in building your skills, developing your confidence or entering the workforce, we'll help you set goals and create a plan to achieve them.


MYTH: Most of the jobs for persons with disabilities offer only low wages and few opportunities.

FACT:
Persons with disabilities have access to all kinds of employment opportunities. What's available to you depends on your experience and skill level. We will help you assess your skills and needs and work with you to find the right vocational match.


MYTH: I will lose my government assistance if I start working.


FACT:
Effective March 1, 2006, persons with disabilities are eligible for a $500 monthly earnings exemption which allows people with disabilities to keep a portion of their after-tax employment income.


MYTH: I won't have personal support once I start working.

FACT:
Triumph supports you to gradually make the transition to independent employment. Depending on your needs, Triumph may provide on-the-job support and assist with the development of natural supports for your long-term employment success. Please download BC's Ministry of Employment and Income Assistance document, Employment Strategy for Persons with Disabilities, for further information regarding this issue. This document states that follow-up supports, including job coaching, are available to those who need extra time or assistance with managing their work duties or achieving job stability.


MYTH: If I quit my job or get fired I'll have a hard time regaining my benefits.

FACT:

MYTH: I'm not able to work full-time, so employers won't hire me.


FACT:
There are many options available to persons with disabilities, including full-time and part-time paid work, volunteer work, work experience, job sharing and much more. Today's job market is very flexible and employers are willing to look at many different options to get the job done! Read more about employment options.


MYTH: I will have to tell my employer about my disability.


FACT:

MYTH: I'm worried that I may jeopardize my safety or the safety of others by taking on certain tasks at work. How can Triumph help me feel secure and safe in my new work environment?


FACT:
Triumph will help you identify appropriate workplaces and occupations that meet your needs. It is our role to help you to feel as comfortable, safe and secure as possible in your new work environment.
