  Natural Supports

Generally speaking, at most workplaces there are people who are naturally inclined to provide extra support to persons with disabilities when needed.

These "natural supports" can be staff members or supervisors who provide training and assistance and promote the inclusion of persons with disabilities at the work site. Natural supports are usually involved in the training process and offer assistance when required as mentors and positive role models.

Personality Traits of a Natural Support

Typically, natural supports are patient and understanding, with strong teaching abilities and a high degree of empathy. Natural supports also provide constructive feedback and guidance during initial training.

Finding a Natural Support

It is usually quite easy to identify a natural support during the initial training period. Once a support is established, it is important for your Vocational Coach to "fade out" from the training process as your comfort with your natural support increases, becoming involved only when necessary. This helps you become part of the work culture.
