Triumph Vocational Services

Taking Control

A Triumph Vocational Services™ Success Story • May, 2005

After years of depression and anxiety, Pius decided to take charge of his life. “I didn’t want my past to own me anymore,” he says. Pius sought help from Mental Health, who referred him to Triumph in March 2004. There, he met Cindy, the job coach who helped Pius uncover his passion for computer assembly.

To prepare Pius for employment, Triumph arranged interpersonal skills workshops as well as computer hardware and software training. Triumph then helped Pius get a job at Pier Street Computers working two afternoons a week. Pius works with customers and helps with computer assembly, repair, and testing. Triumph also provided on the job training to assist the owner, John, with teaching Pius and with the adjustment of having a new employee.

“Where others would give up, Pius persists to make it work,” says Triumph job developer Birgit.

Pius says he’s had to work hard at getting better, and the process isn’t over. But he’s happy with what he’s accomplished while continuing to work towards his goal of independence. Pius doesn’t want to rely on disability benefits anymore, which means obtaining a full-time job. Consequently, since his hire in November 2004, Pius’ hours have increased to three days a week, a big step towards achieving his goals.

“Triumph really tries hard to help people overcome their obstacles to help them get work,” Pius says. “They go out of their way to talk to employers, and find ways for job training.”

“ Where others would give up, Pius persists to make it work.”
